Caring for your flowers
We want to ensure that your enjoy your flowers for as long as possible, so have put together a quick guide on how to look after them properly.

Whatever the type of your floral gift ...here's a few tips on how to prepare and maintain your flowers, and what to do if things go wrong!

Bouquets
Carefully remove your flowers from the cellophane.

Don't go ripping the cellophane away, carefully cut the cellophane with scissors and remove the flowers from their wrapping (Remember to dispose of the wrapping responsibly)

Before placing the flowers in a vase/container it is advisable to cut the stem of each flower with a sharp knife and remove about 2-3 cms from the end. Cutting with a knife as opposed to secateurs or scissors will create a larger area ensuring maximum uptake of water.

It is also a good idea to remove any leaves, which will be below the water before placing in a vase as this will cause contamination to the water, and affect the life of your flowers.
Roses
Roses are very thirsty flowers, and do need special care.
We have therefore written a special page to care for your roses.

Hand Tieds
A 'hand-tied' bouquet is skilfully arranged so you can place the flowers straight into your favourite vase.

The bouquet is delivered in cellophane flower wrap with a reservoir of water to ensure the flowers are as fresh as possible. Release the water from the bouquet by cutting a hole in the cellophane over a sink. Remove all gift wrapping but do not untie your flowers.

If you do not have a suitable vase, you can buy these from as little as £4.99
Vases of Flowers
If you were lucky enough to have your flowers delivered in a vase, then all the initial preparation of the flowers would have already been done for you

However, you must check your vase every day, and add luke warm water to keep it topped up.
(as a guide every 2 days should be sufficient, but remember to check every day.)
Arrangements
The flowers are skillfully arranged in a basket or ceramic/glass container containing special water retaining floral foam (often referred to as Oasis)

Always remember put a mat under the arrangement to protect delicate or wooden surfaces.

Carefully top up the container with water every day, don't allow the foam to dry out. You may be surprised at the amount of water that flowers require to remain healthy. Add luke warm water to a vase/container as opposed to cold water from the tap
Plants
Most plants like light and an even temperature. Avoid draughts, fumes and cold.
Foliage plants require little water in winter. Flowering plants generally need more water.

Every plant has its own specific requirements and all plants should be fertilised as required.

Most plants also include a "care card" with these instructions, but we will be pleased to answer any queries you may have

Orchids, particularly, are often overwatered and need special attention. We will be publishing a specific guide to to orchids shortly.
